A heat pump has another feature outside in the condensing unit - a reversing valve. The purpose of a reversing valve is to reverse the flow of refrigerants. This causes the refrigerant to absorb heat outside in the cold and bring it inside to release the heat inside.

The new ultra-efficient technology is inverter style with higher efficiencies and a growing number of applications. Some heat pumps called Cold Climate heat pumps can absorb heat to be brought inside down to -30 degrees. One of the benefits of a heat pump is the energy usage is substantially reduced, making it a very good addition to your propane, oil or electric furnace.

Tips to Keep Heat Pumps Running Smoothly

> Pick a temperature and leave it. Try not to vary the temperature. It takes much more energy to bring the temperature up than to maintain it - much more than setback savings.
